The political landscape of Andhra Pradesh is witnessing an intense debate over project ownership, structural continuity, and legacy. The grand inauguration of the Ambedkar Kalavedika in the heart of Vijayawada has sparked sharp reactions across the state, bringing governance timelines under public scrutiny. While the current administration led the event to portray the project as though they built the convention center themselves, a critical look at the project’s history exposes a troubling pattern of political opportunism.
The question that the citizens and taxpayers must ask is simple: Why does the government rush to claim unearned credit for finished structures while systematically neglecting the broader public monuments right beside them?
Jagan Built It… Chandrababu Inaugurated It!
The newly opened Ambedkar Kalavedika is the largest multipurpose convention center in the state, built to international standards across 4.4 acres. It sits directly adjacent to the iconic Statue of Social Justice (Samajika Nyaya Maha Shilpam). When Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu cut the ribbon, an impression was carefully manufactured to suggest this grand structure was a product of his administration. However, the factual timeline reveals an undeniable instance of credit theft:
- Vision and Funding: The Ambedkar Kalavedika was initiated entirely under the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government at an estimated cost of around ₹90 crores.
- 80% Completion: The previous administration sanctioned the required funds and successfully completed nearly 80% of the core structural work.
- The Period of Neglect: After assuming power in 2024, the Chandrababu government completely neglected the remaining finishing works of the convention center for almost a year and a half.
- The Push of Criticism: Out of political malice and fear that completing a project within the premises of the Statue of Social Justice would bring recognition to YS Jagan, the current administration ignored the entire premises. It was only after widespread criticism from various sections of society that work finally resumed a few months ago to prepare it for a rushed inauguration.
This eagerness to grab credit stands in sharp contrast to Chandrababu’s own track record. Back in 2016, he announced he would construct an “Ambedkar Smruthi Vanam” in the remote village of Sakhamuru. That project never progressed beyond the foundation stones. In contrast, the previous leadership successfully executed a world-class complex in the heart of the city.
Surpassing Premium Venues, Yet Shadowed by Hypocrisy
Built as a magnificent, government-controlled asset, the Ambedkar Kalavedika was designed to surpass renowned premium venues like the Hitech Auditorium and Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad. The facility includes:
- A massive auditorium capable of seating 2,000 people at a time.
- Advanced audio-visual infrastructure, VIP lounges, executive suites, and green rooms.
- Extensive parking facilities built to international standards.
During the event, Chandrababu Naidu promised that five more large convention centers would be constructed across the state on a similar model. But how can the public trust future promises when the government treats existing infrastructure like a political football, stalling its final touches for 18 months out of sheer political hesitation?
Deliberate Negligence Towards a National Monument
There is absolutely no doubt that if the Chandrababu government pays proper attention to the “Samajika Nyaya Maha Shilpam,” it can emerge as a world-class tourist destination. Spanning 18.81 acres at Swaraj Maidan, the complex features a 125-foot bronze statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar erected on an 81-foot pedestal modeled after the Kalachakra Mahamandapam. Built to withstand earthquakes and heavy winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, it blends Buddhist, Mayan, and Egyptian architectural influences.
The complex is supposed to serve as a national role model, featuring a state-of-the-art experience center, a 75-seat Vihara cinema theatre, an Ambedkar study center, a museum, a musical fountain, and scenic walking paths.
However, while the government actively seeks the spotlight for the adjacent convention center, its deliberate negligence toward the main monument is alarming:
- The nearby children’s park project has been completely abandoned.
- The primary restaurant building has been handed over to the tourism department and reportedly leased out to private individuals.
- Worse still, as part of a deliberate strategy, the number of sanitation and security personnel has been reduced. Those who remain are facing severe hardships because their salaries have been withheld for three to four months.
The Ultimate Question for the Government
True governance is measured by maintenance, continuity, and respect for public money, not by who gets to put their name on a plaque. The political rhetoric surrounding the Ambedkar Kalavedika cannot erase the concrete truth that it was envisioned, funded, and largely executed under YS Jagan’s leadership.
If the government is truly committed to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy, it must stop its selective management. Why are the workers who guard and clean this magnificent national monument being starved of their wages while millions are spent on celebratory inaugurations? The current administration must move beyond staging photo-ops and prove it can responsibly manage the public assets it has inherited.
